One option that gets attention during a hard market are Self Insured Groups (SIGs.) . SIG’s tend to initially advertise lower contribution rates, (premiums,) and lower claim costs, and even dividends on past contributions. Self Insured groups are just that – self insured. As opposed to traditional insurance where insurance companies take both the upside and downside risk, members of the SIG are left holding the bag when things go bad. While the likely hood of a SIG failure in today’s regulated market is low the threat exists. In the case of the SIG “Healthcare Industry Self Insurance Program” (HISIP) Past and current members' might be on the hook for $25million-$28 million to cover reserve shortfalls. This shortfall does not appear to be the result of poor management, but of the new, more stringent regulations placed on SIG’s. Whatever the reason, as many as 300 past and present insured's may have to come up with more than $25 million to shore up the reserves. That’s an average of at least $83,000 per insured. Before you consider a SIG, be sure your agent explains carefully the risks involved. Make sure the SIG has a proven track record and the administrators have a good reputation in the industry. Read everything you are asked sign carefully and make sure you understand the terms and conditions. You may want to consult your attorney. Finally, put any savings in the bank against the day when the assessments arrive. Insurance is like gambling in that it’s hard to beat the odds. If you like to take risks, a SIG might be your cup of tea.

"Serving the Central Valley Since 1946"

At Bacome Insurance Agency we offer a wide range of insurance services as well as financial and business management services. We understand that the personal and business service needs of our clients vary from individual to individual and from business to business. That is why each of our programs and services is custom tailored to meet the needs of the individual client. From personal insurance to business services...we offer a level of expertise that is second to none.
